Lemont, IL…State Representative Nicole La Ha (R-Lemont) announced her support as a co-sponsor of House Bill 1226, an initiative that looks to modernize Illinois’ driver’s license renewal process for older adults. The legislation, introduced by Representative Jeff Keicher (R-Sycamore) alongside Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, seeks to raise the age for mandatory road tests for drivers renewing their license from 79 to 87, while implementing a new system to address driver safety concerns at any age.
“Illinois is the only state in the nation with mandatory road exams based solely on age,” said Rep. La Ha. “This bill reflects a significant step toward fairness and respect for our senior citizens by focusing on their individual abilities rather than stereotypes. It’s an honor to work alongside my colleagues in advancing this important reform.”
Under current law, Illinois drivers aged 79 and older must take a behind-the-wheel test when renewing their licenses. House Bill 1226 proposes that:
-Drivers aged 79 and 80 would only be required to take a vision test during renewal.
-Biennial renewals, without road tests, would apply to drivers aged 81 to 86.
-Annual renewals, including road tests, would begin at age 87.
The legislation builds on a proposal Rep. Keicher introduced in 2024, which sought to eliminate age-based road test requirements for drivers aged 75 and older. That bill passed committee but did not reach a final vote before the General Assembly adjourned.
“Our seniors deserve respect and fairness,” said Rep. La Ha. “I am proud to be part of this effort to ensure Illinois leads with compassion and common sense.”
Rep. La Ha proudly serves the people of the 82nd District.
