State Representative Nicole La Ha released the following statement on Human Trafficking Awareness Day:
“Today is National Human Trafficking Awareness Day. Human trafficking occurs everywhere, even in our own communities. Today, let us all take the time to learn more about the signs of human trafficking and continue the fight to end this horrific crime across the nation.
Human trafficking is a heartbreaking reality that’s closer to home than many realize. Across Illinois, countless individuals are exploited and abused in ways that often go unseen. In 2022, the National Human Trafficking Hotline received 287 calls from Illinois, identifying 199 victims. And those numbers are just the tip of the iceberg. The true scale of this crime is hidden in the shadows, with many victims unable to speak out.
This upcoming General Assembly, I am proud to continue fighting for my sponsored legislation to address human trafficking and strengthen justice for victims:
• HB 5134: Expands the Sex Offender Registration Act to include crimes such as trafficking in persons, involuntary servitude, and involuntary sexual servitude of a minor. This measure enhances monitoring and protection for our communities.
• HB 5466: Eliminates the affirmative defense for individuals accused of patronizing minors engaged in prostitution, ensuring that offenders are held accountable, and minors are shielded from further harm.
• HB 5467: Removes the statute of limitations for prosecuting trafficking offenses involving minors, ensuring that justice can be sought no matter how much time has passed (Video below of when I introduced this bill on the house floor back in April as it passed the house).
You can help in the fight against human trafficking by learning to recognize the signs and reporting suspicious activity. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) offers resources to help you identify and act: Learn more here: https://dcfs.illinois.gov/…/human-trafficking-of…
To report suspected human trafficking or seek help, please use these resources:
• National Human Trafficking Hotline: humantraffickinghotline.org or call 1-888-373-7888 or text 233733.
• Illinois State Police Investigative Tips: isptips.illinois.gov.
• For children at immediate risk, call 911 and the DCFS Child Abuse Hotline at 1-800-25-ABUSE (1-800-252-2873).
Together, we can make a difference and protect those at risk. We must stand united against human trafficking and work toward a safer, stronger Illinois.”
