Lemont, IL…Today, State Representative Nicole La Ha (R-82nd District), alongside Representatives Dan Ugaste (R-65th District) and Jackie Haas (R-79th District), held a press conference at the Bilandic Press Room in Chicago to address Illinois’ ongoing property tax crisis. The representatives focused on the rising property tax burden in Illinois, which continues to weigh heavily on families across the state, calling for immediate action to provide much-needed relief.
“Property taxes in Illinois are out of control, and our hardworking families are paying the price,” said Rep. La Ha. “It’s time for real change and genuine relief. We need to lower these tax rates to ensure that our communities can thrive without being crippled by excessive property tax burdens.”
According to a February 2024 study by Wallet Hub, Illinois has the second-highest property tax burden in the country, with a statewide average of 2.23% across its 102 counties. The press conference brought attention to how this crushing tax structure affects homeowners, business owners, and retirees alike.
At the heart of the discussion were several tax relief measures that Rep. La Ha has introduced/and or supported, including:
- HB4242: Increases the homestead exemption for persons with disabilities from $2,000 to $4,000.
- HB4244: Raises the income limit for the Senior Citizen Homestead Exemption from $65,000 to $80,000.
- HB4866: Establishes a program to award property tax relief grants to school districts, with 100% of the funds going directly to taxpayers.
- HB4229: Exempts licensed day care facilities used exclusively for charitable purposes from property taxes.
“The facts are clear. Families are being crushed under the weight of rising property taxes, and the supermajority in Springfield has done nothing to address this crisis. We need to take immediate action to lower taxes and provide relief,” Rep. La Ha said. “I will continue fighting for the people of Illinois, pushing for legislation that prioritizes families over fiscal mismanagement.”
Nicole La Ha proudly represents the 82nd District. She is dedicated to advocating for lower taxes, government transparency, and policies that support hardworking Illinois families.
