What Progress Are We Making to Strengthen Public Safety in Illinois?

Last week, I had the opportunity to present several pieces of legislation in committee, and I’m grateful to share that three of my bills are now moving forward.

One of those bills, HB5580, focuses on improving how DNA evidence is handled across Illinois. When the Illinois State Police identify a consistent DNA profile, this measure ensures that law enforcement and State’s Attorneys are automatically notified in writing through the state’s system. Communication like this can make a real difference. In many cases, timing shapes outcomes, and clarity helps those responsible for pursuing justice act quickly and confidently.

HB5088 also passed committee, continuing the work of strengthening protections for victims of domestic violence. This legislation addresses coercive control, including financial abuse and coerced debt. Many victims experience control and manipulation long before physical violence occurs. Recognizing those patterns in law gives survivors a stronger path toward protection and support.

In addition, HB4654 advances efforts to combat human trafficking by placing clear, accessible resource information in public restrooms at roadside rest areas. For someone in a desperate situation, a small moment like that can open the door to help and safety.

I’m thankful for the bipartisan support these bills received. It’s encouraging to see people come together around issues that matter deeply to our communities. There is still more work ahead, and I’m committed to continuing that work to move these measures across the finish line and into law.

Dolly Parton Imagination Library

While the house was in session in Springfield, my office stopped by the Dolly Parton imagination library kickoff event at Cantigny Park to show our appreciation and support for this great program!

As a State Representative, an author, and the only member on my side of the aisle who is a mother of school-aged children, it is incredibly meaningful to see an organization like this continue to grow right here in our community and across Illinois. Books are the foundation of developing young minds, and access to them is essential for every child. The Imagination Library helps ensure that children can build a love for reading early, and it’s never too early to start!

Thank you for such a thoughtful, inspiring, and impactful morning!

Neurodiversity Caucus

I was honored to take part in the launch of the Illinois Legislative Neurodiversity Caucus last week.

This caucus brings together leaders committed to better supporting neurodivergent individuals and families across Illinois and making sure their voices are part of the conversation.

Thank you to Representative Natalie Manley, Senator Meg Loughran Cappel, and Senator Seth Lewis for the opportunity to serve as a co-chair. I’m grateful for the trust and look forward to the work ahead.

The caucus is focused on four key pillars: support, access, resources, and education. These are real needs for families, and they deserve real attention. This is personal for so many families like mine, and I’m committed to making sure their voices are heard.
