Lemont, IL…State Representative Nicole La Ha announced today that two of her public safety bills, House Bill 4654 and House Bill 5580, have successfully passed committee, both with bipartisan support.
“Human trafficking often stays hidden, and that silence is where it grows,” said Rep. La Ha. “By placing resources directly in front of those who may be looking for a way out, we’re creating a real opportunity for intervention. This is a simple, practical step that can make a meaningful difference, and I’m grateful to see such strong bipartisan support.”
House Bill 4654, which passed unanimously, strengthens efforts to combat human trafficking by requiring clear, visible resource notices in all public restrooms at Illinois roadside rest areas. These locations can offer victims a rare moment alone and a chance to seek help. The initiative was brought forward in partnership with the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.
House Bill 5580 also passed out of committee, marking an important step toward improving how Illinois handles DNA evidence in criminal investigations. The bill requires that when the Illinois State Police identifies a consistent DNA profile, law enforcement agencies and State’s Attorneys are automatically notified in writing through the state’s Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
“When critical evidence is found, every moment matters,” Rep. La Ha said. “This bill ensures faster communication, better tracking, and fewer delays so cases can move forward without unnecessary gaps. Families deserve a justice system that responds quickly and decisively.”
