State Representative Nicole La Ha released the following statement regarding new laws taking effect in 2026:
“2026 is coming fast, and with it, some new laws taking effect here in Illinois.
One that concerns me is HB 3572, which expands a diversion program for people found unfit to stand trial. I understand the goal, but we have to make sure accountability doesn’t slip through the cracks and that victims aren’t forgotten.
We’re also seeing new AI-in-hiring rules (HB3773). These mandates increase compliance obligations and heighten the risk of litigation for businesses. Small business owners, already stretched thin, worry that even minor missteps could lead to costly penalties or lawsuits.
There are some bright spots, though. HB 2774, a bill I proudly co-sponsored, improves Illinois’ domestic violence hotline, making it easier for survivors to get immediate support when they need it most.
And my bill, HB 3377, will help shine a light on how schools use federal funds for students experiencing homelessness so those resources truly reach the kids who need them.
As always, I’m here to push back on laws that make life harder for families and small businesses and to support the ones that move our communities forward in meaningful ways.
