Has Public Service Become a Personal Risk?

Serving your community shouldn’t mean risking you or your family’s safety. Yet that’s the reality far too many first responders and public officials are facing today. The recent tragedy in Minnesota, where State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband lost their lives, and State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife were seriously injured, was a heartbreaking reminder of what’s at stake.

It’s horrifying and unacceptable.

I’ve renewed my call to pass my bill, the Public Safety and Justice Privacy Act, to give our frontline servants the privacy protections they deserve. This bill would prohibit individuals and organizations from sharing personal information like home addresses and phone numbers of first responders and members of the General Assembly. Violating these protections would carry serious consequences.

These are common-sense steps to protect the people who serve us every day. No one should have to wonder if doing their job could put a target on their back. No one should have to trade their personal safety to be a public servant.
