Homer Glen, IL…Yesterday, State Representative Nicole La Ha proudly recognized Amelia Burbank, a determined 9-year-old who saw a problem and took action to fix it. Amelia received a Certificate of Achievement from Rep. La Ha for her dedication to making playgrounds more welcoming for all kids, including those with mobility challenges.
Rep. La Ha commended Amelia’s vision and leadership, saying, “Amelia has shown us all that age is never a barrier to making a difference. Her kindness, determination, and willingness to take action make her an incredible role model. Our community is lucky to have her.”
Amelia’s journey started earlier this year when she noticed that her school’s playground lacked equipment for children who use wheelchairs. Rather than just wishing things were different, Amelia decided to do something about it. She launched “Amelia’s Act of Kindness,” a fundraiser aimed at helping her school purchase new playground equipment that would allow every child to play together.
With the support of her classmates, teachers, and family, she organized a toy donation drive and a school-wide yard sale, selling gently-used toys and household items to raise money for the effort. Donations poured in from across the community, and the initiative gained momentum, leading school leaders to work alongside Amelia to choose the best equipment for their budget.
“I am inspired by Amelia’s passion for change, and the strength to see her vision come to fruition,” Rep. La Ha continued. “I believe in what she’s doing. It’s a great reminder that we can make an impact for others with a little love and determination.”
Rep. Nicole La Ha proudly serves the people of the 82nd District.
