Representative La Ha’s Latest

The spring legislative session came to a close in the early hours of Sunday morning, and like many of you, I’m still catching my breath. It was a long and difficult session, one that ended with decisions I fundamentally disagree with and could not support in good conscience.

Let me be honest: I’m frustrated. I came to Springfield to be a voice for families, taxpayers, and people who feel ignored by politics as usual. And what I saw unfold at the Capitol felt like more of the same, more spending, more taxes, and fewer opportunities for working people to catch a break.

The final budget that was pushed through increases state spending to a record $55.2 billion, nearly $2 billion more than last year. And to pay for it? Another $1 billion in new taxes. Not a penny of property tax relief. Not even a hint of easing the burden for families trying to stay afloat in this economy. Caregivers for individuals with disabilities were promised raises, but they’re getting fewer hours. So, families will have to do more with less. Again.

I voted no on this reckless budget. Not because I don’t believe in supporting our communities, but because I believe we deserve better: real solutions, real relief, and real accountability.

But even in the face of these challenges, there are victories worth celebrating. We’ve made meaningful progress to support those who need it most. My bill, HB2537, is now headed to the Governor’s desk, ensuring students with disabilities and their families have the information they need to protect their access to educational services. We also took a big step forward with HB3377, securing funding to support homeless youth and provide critical resources for those facing housing insecurity. HB3677 passed both houses too, my bill to streamline repairs on complex equipment like wheelchairs to help get people moving again.

I was also proud to co-sponsor the Relief for Working Families package, which focuses on real solutions for hardworking Illinoisans, from protecting tipped workers’ earnings to expanding technical training for high-paying careers.

These victories matter because they directly impact people’s lives. I’m grateful to my colleagues for their support, and I look forward to continuing the fight for Illinois families.

There’s still work to do, and I’m not backing down.

Thank you for staying engaged.

HB3677: A Win for Mobility and Independence

One of the bills I’m most proud of that passed this session is HB3677, the Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act. This bill eliminates the pre-authorization process for repairs on complex wheelchairs, cutting the red tape that often leaves people waiting too long for the repairs their mobility depends on.

Wheelchair users and their families shouldn’t have to jump through hoops to move freely and independently. I carried this bill with them in mind and now it’s headed to the Governor’s desk.

Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month

Another highlight was seeing HR173 adopted on the House Floor, my resolution declaring May 2025 as Prader-Willi Syndrome Awareness Month. I was honored to speak on behalf of families affected by this rare and challenging condition.

Raising awareness matters. Supporting research matters. And ensuring these families feel seen and supported is something I’ll always stand for.

Mother of the Year: An Unexpected and Humbling Moment

On a more personal note, I was deeply honored (and completely surprised!) to receive Hyatt Magazine’s Mother of the Year award. I thought I was showing up for a simple Mother’s Day celebration, but it turned into something I’ll never forget.

Being a mom is the most sacred role in my life. It shapes how I lead, how I legislate, and how I love. To every mom reading this: you are doing more than you know. You are not alone. You are irreplaceable.

Free Fishing Derby – June 7 in Orland Park

Looking ahead, I’m teaming up with Sen. John Curran to host our annual Free Fishing Derby at Tampier Lake West on Saturday, June 7, from 9:00 to 11:30 AM.

Bring the kids (12 and under), enjoy the outdoors, and maybe even win a prize for the biggest fish! We’ll have free rods for the first 50 kids, a water safety presentation, and T-shirts for the first 200 participants. It’s one of my favorite events of the year. Hope to see you there!

Speaking to Healthcare Leaders

As a licensed dental professional, I was honored to speak at the Illinois State Dental Society’s conference. It felt good to reconnect with my roots and advocate for the future of oral healthcare in our state.

From the exam room to the House chamber, I’m committed to protecting patients, supporting providers, and standing up for common-sense policies that improve lives.
