State Representative Nicole La Ha released the following statement following this week in Springfield:
“Weekly wrap-up!
As the spring legislative session heats up, this week has been one for the books. With the 3rd reading deadline for House Bills, we’ve been working around the clock to move important legislation forward, culminating in a marathon 12-hour voting session yesterday.
Despite the long hours, I’m proud to report meaningful wins! Here’s a snapshot of the progress we’ve made:
House Bill 2537: Protects the rights of students with disabilities, ensuring families have clarity and resources when their child graduates high school. This bill empowers parents to celebrate their child’s graduation while continuing education and support services until age 22.
House Bill 3677: The Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act passed the House, improving access to wheelchair repairs and empowering users with independence and mobility. This bill streamlines repair processes and supports independent repair providers with essential tools and training.
House Bill 1788: Strengthens the Open Space Lands Acquisition and Development Act (OSLAD grant) by prioritizing playground projects that exceed ADA requirements, fostering fully inclusive and accessible parks for families of all abilities.
House Bill 3377: Enhances transparency in school funding for homeless students, ensuring ISBE tracks and allocates resources effectively to meet their needs.
House Bill 2978 (chief co-sponsor): Establishes the Family Neonatal Intensive Care Leave Act, granting parents job-protected time off to be with their newborns in the NICU.
House Bill 2521 (chief co-sponsor): Improves safety and accountability in school sports by requiring background checks for individuals applying to be licensed athletic officials. This ensures that those overseeing student athletics meet clear safety standards and maintain a trusted environment for our kids.
House Bill 1366 (chief co-sponsor): Strengthens parents’ voices in the special education process, providing clear rights and tangible resources.
None of this progress happens in isolation. I’m deeply grateful for the collaborative efforts of advocates, colleagues, and constituents who share a vision for a better Illinois. Together, we’re making strides that change lives.
As these bills move to the Senate, I remain committed to keeping the momentum going. Stay tuned for more updates!”
