Lemont, IL…State Representative Nicole La Ha (R-Lemont) is spearheading a legislative effort to combat human trafficking in Illinois through a series of bills aimed at strengthening protections for survivors, extending the window for prosecution, and increasing penalties for traffickers and exploiters. The legislative package, House Bills 1114, 1467, and 1469, represents Rep. Nicole La Ha’s continued advocacy against this horrendous crime.
“Human trafficking is a horrific crime that thrives in secrecy and silence, and Illinois must take decisive action to stop it,” said Rep. La Ha. “These bills send a clear message that traffickers will not escape accountability, and survivors will have every opportunity to seek justice.”
HB1114-Extends the statute of limitations for prosecuting human trafficking-related crimes: Many survivors of trafficking do not come forward immediately due to trauma, fear, or coercion. This legislation recognizes those challenges and ensures that time does not run out on justice.
HB1467-Closes legal loopholes that have allowed traffickers and those who profit from human exploitation to evade prosecution: This bill strengthens legal definitions of trafficking-related offenses, expands protections for minors, and increases penalties for individuals who knowingly facilitate trafficking. By enhancing the legal framework surrounding these crimes, the bill ensures that offenders are held accountable and that survivors receive the justice they deserve.
HB1469-Ensures that individuals convicted of human trafficking, involuntary servitude, and related crimes are properly classified and monitored, by being added to the sex offender registry list. This legislation implements stricter registration requirements, enabling law enforcement to track offenders more effectively and prevent repeat offenses. This measure helps safeguard communities by ensuring that convicted traffickers cannot continue preying on vulnerable individuals.
Rep. La Ha is urging bipartisan support for these bills, emphasizing that the fight against human trafficking is a human rights issue, not a political one. She is working alongside law enforcement, survivor advocacy groups, and legal experts to ensure the bills move forward in the General Assembly.
Rep. Nicole La Ha proudly serves the people of the 82nd District.
