Rep. Nicole La Ha Introduces Property Tax Relief Bill for Seniors

Lemont, IL…State Representative Nicole La Ha is standing up for Illinois seniors with newly filed legislation looking to provide much-needed property tax relief. House Bill 1789, sponsored by La Ha, seeks to protect seniors from unpredictable and burdensome increases in their property tax bills.

“For many of our seniors, the homes they’ve lived in for decades have become an overwhelming financial burden due to skyrocketing property taxes,” said Rep. La Ha. “HB1789 is about protecting our seniors and ensuring they can remain in their homes without the fear of unpredictable and unsustainable tax increases. It’s a commonsense solution that prioritizes stability and fairness.”

This legislation amends the Illinois Property Tax Code to cap the total property tax bill for any property receiving the Senior Citizens Homestead Exemption. Under the bill, property tax bills for eligible seniors could not exceed 101% of the previous year’s bill, except in cases where improvements to the property increase its fair market value.

With rising property taxes disproportionately affecting those on fixed incomes, Rep. La Ha’s bill offers a lifeline to seniors who have contributed to their communities for years. By limiting year-over-year tax increases, HB1789 provides a safeguard against financial uncertainty while still allowing for reasonable adjustments related to home improvements.

“Our seniors deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing they won’t be taxed out of the homes they’ve worked so hard to build,” La Ha added. “This legislation puts fairness and compassion at the center of our tax system, and I’m proud to lead the charge. Seniors, I am with you in this fight!”

HB1789 will be considered in the upcoming legislative session. Rep. La Ha encourages constituents to share their support for the bill and voice how this measure would benefit their families and communities.

Rep. La Ha proudly serves the people of the 82nd District.
